GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Even for the most experienced traveler, the Far East can’t fail to fascinate. Here you can still glimpse the truly exotic — gilded shrines and floating markets, sampans in mist-shrouded harbours, harvested rice left to dry in the sun. But equally fascinating is the juxtaposition of the new and the old: skyscrapers towering over stone-carved temples: bullet trains speeding past rice paddies and tea plantations.

See the magnificent splendor of the Shwedagon Pagoda, a golden shrine towering to a height of 326 feet. Nearby visit the Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda with its reclining 230-foot-long Buddha statue, which was completed in 1966. Rising up from the Royal Lake, Karaweik Hall was built in the shape of the mythical Karaweik bird. The Botahtaung Pagoda was named after the 1,000 military leaders who escorted the sacred hair relics of Buddha, brought from India over 2,000 years ago. Opened in 1906 and located near the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel, the Yangon Zoo is noted for its collection of wild animals from around the world.

Long closed to Westerners, the Russian Far East is one of the planet’s least explored destinations. Winter ice isolates the Kuril Islands with their stunning volcanic landscapes and spectacular populations of seabirds and cetaceans. The world’s largest bear roams the Kamchatka Peninsula, while the nutrient-rich waters of the Bering Sea support every form of Arctic life. This is a fantasyland for the intrepid explorer, and every landing here holds promise of something awesome, amazing… encounters that will be with you for a lifetime.
